Muslim Women and the Media Alumna Releases Podcast About Muslim American Experiences

The Muslim Women and the Media Training Institute at UC Davis offers workshops and mentorship to early-career journalists with the aim of fostering accurate reporting and representation of Muslim women and Islam in the media. Participants are paired with leading scholars on women and Islamic cultures to help develop pieces for publication.

With two other journalists, Yasmin Bendaas—a journalist and recent Institute participant—developed a podcast for sharing nuanced stories about Muslim American experiences, exploring “who we are, in all of our diversity, while growing up against a media backdrop of everything we are not.”

The first episodes of “Me and My Muslim Friends” discuss Black Muslims & Racism, Latina Converts, and War & Mental Health.
