2023 Grants by the Numbers
Featured Grants
Indigenous Communities and Climate Change
Indigenous peoples are disproportionately affected by climate change; they also steward the territories that sequester the most carbon and host the greatest biodiversity. We believe that they must help to lead the global response to environmental change.
To support this leadership role, we have begun to award grants to community-based organizations and knowledge institutions around the world. This collaborative effort by the Luce Foundation's program directors aims to elevate indigenous perspectives and priorities in the global effort to tackle climate change. The fund employs various strategies, including cultural heritage preservation, journalism, and training emerging leaders, to support indigenous communities as they take an active role in shaping the future of our planet.
Strengthening Democracy
Our Democracy, Ethics, and Public Trust Initiative supports journalism and digital media, civic participation, and human thriving. The program aims to strengthen the ability of organizations, communities, and sectors to determine their own best futures and to re-imagine and re-invent democratic culture and practice. The program's focus is on the phenomena undermining confidence in democracy among citizens and communities.
