Jan. 13, 2019

The Henry Luce Foundation awarded The Graduate Center a grant of $249,000 to increase gender parity in its mathematics and computer science Ph.D. programs by supplementing five graduate fellowships to enhance ongoing recruitment efforts. The prestigious fellowships will include personalized mentoring and funds for conference travel and housing.

The grant was awarded by the foundation’s Clare Boothe Luce Program, one of the most significant sources of private support for women in science, mathematics, and engineering in higher education in the United States.

“With these fellowships, The Graduate Center intends to recruit and support top female mathematics and computer science students,” said Professor Joshua Brumberg (GC/Queens, Psychology), Graduate Center dean for the sciences. “We know that women remain severely underrepresented in STEM fields, and we’re grateful to the Henry Luce Foundation for this generous grant, which will enhance our efforts to foster greater gender equality.”
