Democracy, Ethics, and Public Trust

Democracy, Ethics, and Public Trust

Responsive Grants

The Democracy, Ethics, and Public Trust Initiative considers proposals in its three focus areas:

  • Information Ecosystems

  • Communities and Governments

  • Confidence in Democracies

Information ecosystems grants  can be sought for innovative news gathering and publishing initiatives, for efforts to equip journalists and audiences to produce and interpret news more effectively, and for the development of equitable and inclusive digital spaces.

Communities and government grants focus on improving the responsiveness and effectiveness of public officials and public policies and services, especially at the subnational level. These grants also support efforts by citizens and communities to participate more actively in priority setting, policy development, and resource allocation.

Confidence in democracy grantmaking recognizes that democratic governments cannot survive if the people they govern do not thrive. Those who live in democracies expect that their governments will provide access to education, healthcare, personal security, and economic opportunity. Grants in this area focus on projects that strengthen confidence in democracy by strengthening the capacity of people to improve and secure their well-being.

The Luce Foundation’s Democracy, Ethics, and Public Trust Initiative primarily supports projects in the United States. Because the initiative’s funding is very limited, most proposals in this area will be invited. If you would like to bring your project or organization to the Foundation’s attention, please complete and submit a concept note through the grants portal.
