About Shivram

Shivram Viswanathan is a Ph.D. student at Harvard University, where he studies economics and politics. As a 2020-2021 Luce Scholar, he spent time in South Korea and Taiwan conducting research on structural transformation, financial participation, and economic history. Prior to his Luce Year, Shivram was a senior research analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where he conducted academic research on banks, their regulation, their history, and how they affect household decisions. He also worked on administering and developing statistical and economic models in the Dodd-Frank Act Stress Tests, which were created in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis in 2008. Shivram studied economics and mathematics at Rutgers University, where he did research on civil conflict and the slave trade, led the national championship-winning College Federal Reserve Challenge team, and consulted with nonprofit and poverty-alleviation organizations as a member of the New Brunswick Google Community Leaders Program. Shivram is an avid student and performer of spiritual music from various cultures. From major choral works to Islamic mystical Sufi songs, these musical styles put him in touch with his identity as a hyphenated American. In addition, he enjoys playing and watching basketball, and cooking and consuming spicy food.
