Responsive Grants

Asia Responsive Grants provide opportunities to improve understanding between the United States and the Asia-Pacific region. These grants typically support research, create new scholarly and public resources, or promote the exchange of ideas and information between Americans and Asians.

Letters of inquiry can be submitted at any time through our online portal. Should you have questions in advance of completing the Letter of Inquiry, you may e-mail them to

Restrictions for Responsive Grants

Funding is limited to programs and projects concerning the countries and cultures of Northeast and Southeast Asia. The Foundation's guidelines and resources do not allow inclusion of South or Central Asia. Also, there is no separate category of support for travel, publications, translation or individual research, and funding is not generally provided for stand-alone conferences.

Special Initiatives

The Foundation funds multi-year grant competitions, known as special initiatives, on specific issues or themes relevant to the study of Asia.

The newest initiative is the Luce Initiative on Southeast Asia (LuceSEA), which will begin accepting applications on September 14, 2018.

The previous initiative, the Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment (LIASE), concluded grantmaking in 2017 and is no longer accepting proposals.
