RESOLUTION HONORING TERRILL E. LAUTZ

On the occasion of the retirement of Terrill E. Lautz as Vice President and Secretary of the Henry Luce Foundation on July 31, 2008, the Directors of the foundation wish to recognize his leadership and generous service during the past 24 years.

His initial appointment reflected then Executive Director Robert Armstrong’s strategy to bring increased expertise to the direction of our programs and to enhance the foundation’s professional practices. A scholar of China, Terry Lautz brought solid academic preparation and significant life experience to his new work. In the nearly quarter-century that has followed, he has contributed to the growth of our programs and more broadly to the fields we seek to serve.

As Program Director for Asia, Terry Lautz has assured the attainment of the foundation’s goal, to increase understanding of Asia. He has skillfully developed targeted initiatives and a robust agenda of responsive grants. His efforts have contributed to the development of new intellectual resources, the fostering of new leaders, and effective networks of scholars and practitioners across the Pacific.

His leadership has extended to other programs of the foundation, including our longstanding Henry R. Luce Professorship program and our wider efforts in higher education. He has encouraged interdisciplinary exploration and innovation, always with an eye to excellence and an ear for new ideas. Over the past four years, he has led the development and implementation of the Henry R. Luce Initiative in Religion and International Affairs. This initiative demonstrates his capacity to listen respectfully, to study deeply, and to design effective programs to respond to urgent global needs.

As Vice President and Secretary, Terry has been a model of leadership and service. He has mentored colleagues within and beyond the foundation, and has burnished our reputation in the communities we seek to serve. The clarity of our communications, the vigor of our outreach, and the respectful environment we inhabit can all be attributed to his faithful service over 24 years.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Directors of the Henry Luce Foundation hereby record our profound gratitude, respect and admiration for Terrill E. Lautz’s contributions to the foundation. The Directors express best wishes for the continued success of his contributions in scholarship, teaching and leadership in the years to come.
